Riga can take pride in a beautiful newly renovated city area with Middle Age character. This is where the tourists come to learn about the city's long and from time to time violent history, but also to enjoy the summer's café life and shop in the many shops and from street vendors. Unfortunately, Riga has a bad reputation as a gay city because of an aggressive antigay mob trying to stop the Pride marches. However, there are gay places and as a gay tourist, you can feel safe, but make sure to be a bit street smart.
