The capital of Washington State is called Seattle. The city itself has close to 600 000 inhabitants and in the greater Seattle area approximately 3.5 million. Archaeological digs reveal that the area has been inhabited for nearly 4000 years. When the Europeans arrived in 1851, the Duwamish tribe lived in the region. The city got its name from Indian chief Noah Sealth.
Seattle has a Mediterranean climate with wet winters and dry summers. However, the winters can get colder here than in the Mediterranean with temperatures around zero. The city only has around 58 days each year with clear weather, primarily in the summer. The city is situated by the Pacific Ocean and is an important port, though the economy today primarily focuses on IT and telecommunications.
The city has a lively gay scene with clubs and bars concentrated around East Pine and East Pike. The state laws about alcohol mean that there is an age limit of 21 in the bars, and they are not allowed to serve alcohol between 2 at night and 6 in the morning.
